Pay what you want for World Of Goo

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

World Of Goo the award winning puzzle game from 2D boy is celebrating its first birthday with a Pay-what-you-want purchase model. The normal price for the game is 20 $ but now you can pay literally anything. They have set up a donation buying mechanism and then they sent you an email with a url from where you can download the three game versions(Windows/Mac/Linux). The offer stands for the next 4 days.

At the end of the purchase the have set up a small survey about this new buying experience with some interesting results.

We, on allroundgeek.com, welcome this buying model. Not because we are cheap bastards, but because we think that the game industry in general are greedy bastards that overcharge for games. Kudos and respect to 2D boy.

Go take advantage of the offer and show your support and at the same time get one of the best gaming experiences of the last year.

Well, to tell the truth, we ARE cheap bastards! But yeah, the gaming industry have gone way too far, especially now with their MMORPGs...

Excellent move and I hope more companies will follow 2D Boy's example!

Actually i think the MMORPG model is fine. They provide you a service each month which is very costly for them: designers, many behemoth servers, administrators for server, game masters etc. You pay around 10$ a month for countless hours of fun. I find this an honest model.

What sucks is that they charge 50 and 60 euros for games that last 10 hours of gameplay and then try to trick you into DLC(premium donwloadable content) which is usually of laughable quanity and quality and they charge you 10 or more euros for it.
They lately started omitting content from the actual retail game to charge you after a month for it in DLC. SCREW YOU greedy bastards!
More venom in a future post....
