Play League of Legends on Mac OS X

League of Legends is currently one of the most popular games around. The refined DOTA-clone in the absence of a better MOBA game dominates the scene. Unfortunately for Mac users Riot games has still not given us an official client to enjoy it. The company announced last year that it would launch a mac client but, alas, has not done so. The summer went by, fall went by and still nothing. During the summer though, Riot proceeded with a mac client beta testing for the North American server. It used Transgaming's Cider Technology for the client, meaning that it used a Mac Wrapper around the Windows client. For unknown reasons this did not have a happy ending with an official release. The good news is that we can use this Beta client to play on either, the NA or EU, server with a bit of fiddling. Forget all about the bootcamp crap or virtual machine crap. This is the real deal. Launch, play and enjoy LOL right from your Mac's Desktop as a native Mac OS X application.

Here is how:
  • Download the beta client. You can download the beta client from a torrent (you are going to need a torrent client to download this, like μtorrent). Don't worry, it is perfectly legal(it's a free game after all). Also you can download via the rapidshare link provided by boompje(for specific instruction for the boompje link check here).
  • Make sure that you have set your primary Mac Language as US English (System Preferences-> Language and Text) or it will crash during install.
  • Install the game using one of the aforementioned methods.
  • In some cases the application will close immediately after trying to open. If this happen do what is suggested here on page 18 by user felixjet
  • Open your Application folder and Right-Click on LOL application. Select "Show Package Contents"
  • Download the cracked LolLauncher.exe and replace the one found in Contents --> Resources --> Transgaming --> c_drive --> rads --> projects-> lol_launcher-> releases->0.0.0.xx->deploy.
  • ONLY if you are planning to play on the NA Server: let the game update. Other wise if you are planning to play on the EU servers launch it and let it update AFTER you have configured everything else below.
  • Go to : Contents -> Resources -> transgaming -> c_drive -> rads -> Projects -> lol_air_client_config_na -> releases -> 0.0.0.1 -> deploy
  • Open the "lol.properties" file with you text editor.
  • Replace the text inside the file
For the European Server the contents of the file should look like this:

For the North American server the contents of the file should look like this:

  • Save the file.
  • ONLY If you are planning to play on the European server: Go to Contents --> Resources --> Transgaming --> c_drive --> rads --> system and open the "system.cfg" file.
  • Replace the "Region = NA" with "Region = EU".
  • Save the file.
  • You can now switch your Language Preferences back to normal.
  • Enjoy the game.

UPDATE: I no longer answer questions in the comments section regarding this as I have stopped playing LoL and moved on to Dota 2. You are of course welcome to use the comments section to ask a question since another user might be able to answer to you.

No, I did not make this. I simply found the mac beta client and got it to work on my mac(Early 2008 Macbook Pro). This is a guide of what I did to make it work. It might not be the same for you.

No, I am not affiliated and I do not gain anything from it. I am simply a gamer just like you.

Will this work on my Mac?
This is based on a BETA client that was never meant to be a final release for the public. Thus, it might not work for you or it might require a lot of twiking to get it to work properly.

Will this play on my G4/G5 Mac?
No, it will not. It will only play on Intel based Macs.

Will this play on Mac OSX Tiger?
No, it will not.

Will this work on Mac OSX Lion?
I personally have not tested in Lion (Only Snow Leopard) but other users have reported that it works fine.

I am in Asia. Will I be able to play with this client?
Probably not. Riot games blocks IPs coming from Asia so you will not be able to join using a European or a NA account. Garena deals with SEA region for LoL and I am not aware if they use the same configuration and what the host addresses are.

Will this play on Mac which has Intel Integrated Graphics Card?
Chances are that it will not play properly. You need a Mac with a dedicated graphics card.

I get graphical glitches/white pages/weird graphics?
Try setting all graphics options to "Low". Not "very low" or "medium". The beta client probably has some issues with some graphic cards and this is the only way to make it play properly.

I get an "$INSTALLVOLUME/installer/AdobeAIR/en-US.plist".
Try installing the game from the full client instead of the downloader/installer. Make sure you have installed adobe air first.

I have installed everything but when I click on the game launcher it seems like it is starting but then it stops and nothing happens.
In some cases the application will close immediately after trying to open. If this happen do what is suggested here on page 18 by user felixjet around the middle of the page.

Riot closed the BETA so you need to use a crakced launcher for the game. Right click on the lol application and chose 'show package contents'. Download the cracked LolLauncher.exe and replace the one found in Contents --> Resources --> Transgaming --> c_drive --> rads --> projects-> lol_launcher-> releases->0.0.0.xx->deploy.

The game server is unavailable today due to being down for maintenance. Dont' worry nobody can play at this time either you are a windows or a mac user. If you click on the read more under the "unavailable" it explains the downtime. it was supposed to be up by now But Riot games are known for being late when it comes to getting the server up again.

everything was ok afterwards and i did play on EU with my friends.. I have another problem today. A patch came out and i patched LoL. Everything is ok, i pressed Play and i got onto the logging screen. I type my acc and pass and i get an invalid combination of username/password. i double checked and I can log in with my account on the site but I cant at the game logging screen

Check the lol.properties file again in case it was reverted to NA with the update.
There also might be a problem until the EU server is fully patched. We got the update from the NA server(due to the old beta client) but the EU server is not yet patched and the client might not be allowed to connect until it is (probably later tonight)
Riot games are not the brightest of people when it comes to updates and maintenance.

yep. Thats what I think is happening. But, make sure you check the lol.properties file to see that the EU settings were not overwritten with NA settings from the update.

The EU servers were patched today so you will be able to enjoy the game. I connected to the EU server, it was full and i had to wait for a couple of minutes but other than that it works fine.

Hello, i followed the steps and i cant log into the EU server, i can get in the NA server instead, i changed the lol.prop file and it was setted on the EU server.

You need to create an account on the EU server as well. The same account does not work for both the NA and the EU server.
If you go to the LoL site on the top it has preselected "North America". Click on "Europe" and then create a new account.

Open the properties files with your text editor
(TextEdit is the default). After you replace the contents of the file simply click on File->Save

I seem to be able to get on the NA servers just fine but when I try to log on EU with the EU account I made it says the account name / password isn't recognized. I'm on version 1.29.25 if its the same problem that other guy had.

make sure that you have changed the lol.properties file to connect to the EU server.
IN addition to make sure that your european account works select "Europe" from the top menu of the lol site and try to login there.

When I try to log in on the site for europe it recognizes the account and password but it says I need to log into the game before I can log in on the site. I'm guessing it has something to do with the lol.properties thing but I can't see anything wrong what I have written in it.

You might want to login from to the game first in order to activate the european account. I am not sure about this. It s just a theory. However you should be able to login to the game from any client if everything is correct.

At any rate try logging in from a windows client to see if you still have the same problem. If you do not try logging in from the mac client. If you are still not able then there is something wrong with your installation or lol.properties file.

I tried that, got someone else to log on an EU account that I made. Worked for them, didn't work for me. My lol.properties file has the exact same text as what you posted for EU so I'm pretty sure thats not the issue. Maybe I did something wrong during the installation. Thanks anyways though, on NA it works great.

I looked into the matter and i think I found what causes it. since you can play on the NA server your installation should be fine. Today though, the EU server is almost always full and it places you on a login queue in order to wait to login. The code i had for lol.properties did not take that into account(its the last parameter "lq_uri").

You can now find the correct login queue address in the updated post. Use this instead of the previous one in your lol.properties file. I think this will solve your problem. Good Luck.

Let it fully update first and then edit the lol.properties file. When it is fully updated, and if you downloaded the correct client, it will change to 0.0.0.1

I am currently playing the game in a older macbook pro model featuring an Nvidia 8600GT. That means that your hardware should not be an issue here.
Try reinstalling the game and see what happens. Check that adobe air is installed properly as it is needed from the game client.

I resolved the problem of the game closing immediately after attempting to open it.

1) Open your activity monitor (Applications>Utilities).

2) Force any LoL related processes to quit. (There may not be any open).

3) Attempt to open the game; it will probably close.

4) Force any new LoL related processes to quit. (There were 2 for me, once closed on its own)

5) Open the game and accept the EULA!

Patching now :)

My Problem is different. The Game started the first time I attempted to open it -> 2 icons popped up -> i accepted the agreement and finished all there was to do in this window until it closes -> the other icon stays there for a while and then just closes itself too...
If I try to reopen the game the icon pops up stays for a while and closes itself... it leaves no other activities on the monitor, it just closes

I cannot think what causes is it. It might be a hardware issue( what sort of graphics card do you have, as intel integrated graphics might cause a problem).
Try setting your language to US english and then launch the game.
Press option+command+esc to see if any instance of the game is still running after failure. If there is force quit it and try to launch again.
As a last resort try reinstalling the game and adobe air.

Yeah.. about the language... in my case it doesn't work at all if I set the system language to US-English! If I do so the installer shows an error that adobe air cant find a specific property (I think it was something ending with ...Us.En)... If I install it with system language English it works perfectly fine -> but still the game collapses shortly after starting
There are no processes running after the game collapses...

I am using a MacBookPro // OS X Version 10.6.6 // 2.4GHz INtel Core 2 Duo // 5GB 1067 Mhz DDR3 Memory // NVIDIA GeForce 320M

I honestly have no idea what do to... :(

I looked into it but I cannot find a solution as i am not sure what causes the problem. Your system is ok hardware requirements-wise. The Nvidia 320M is a bit slower than the 8600GT but not by much so it shouldn't cause a problem.
Of course this solution is depending an a beta client so there could be issues with certain hardware components that could cause crashes.
Since the first thing that the game launches is the adobe air client try installing adobe air separately and prior to game .

This is exactly what I was experiencing. If you have the activity monitor open while you attempt to open the game, new processes will appear. Force quit them before they disappear, and the problem should be fixed, allowing you to start the game properly.

you know mate that i cannot point to you anywhere regarding that. The snow leopard update that includes the whole OS in, is out for around 30 euros.

yeah, I did trick with activiti monitor, and he start uptade, but at 3's task its show not stabil time , when it ill finish like a 10hours, 5 hours, 9 hours, btw he started with 120hours, but now he stay on 9/10h

yeah its just bug 120h it finished normally but gameplay sux, its slow like a on weak pc :o my mac is dual core intel, 6gb ram, 256mb video card, when i was playing on bootcamped windows xp its was ok but now...

Today Riot Games server is experiencing some problems(as usual) and some games experience heavy lag and some do not even start properly. I am not sure if this related to your issue. Your MBP should run the game fine.

This is really strange. It should work fine but then again with a beta client as base for the game you never know? What graphics card do you have? Is it an nvidia one or an intel integrated graphics. If it is the latter slow performance is attributed to the graphics card and its bad driver for OSX. If not then i do know what it might be. Do you have any other programs open while running the game? Have you updated your OSX with its latest version? Try installing Apple's X11 from the leopard disc in case you have not already. I am not sure this will solve anything but since this game is based on a window's port it might affect the performance. since i am playing the game on snow leopard i do know if the previous this affects performance as well.

I do not have any ideas regarding the downloader issue. make sure you can write where it is trying to write.

I assume that from the website you mean the official LoL website. You canNOT use the normal installer since it can only work in windows.
You should either use the mac beta installer(rapidshare link) or the mac beta client(torrent link)

When you open the application it will start the update process automatically. It will let you know when its done

Anyway, it seems to work, but not by clicking the lol launcher button. Instead I found a button under mac_lol_air_client saying "lolClient"

If i click there the game starts fine, after a few seconds this message comes up: Maestro server: "there was an error conecting"

what do i do?

If it still says 0.0.0.0 then it has not updated. I do no know how is that or why the behaviour that you describe happens. My advice is to delete everything and reinstall from scratch following the instructions just to be sure. The installation might be corrupt or something did not go as planned.

It doesn't give me any feedback on wether its fully updated or not. When i first start the game, its on for while, then dissapears.

I checked it this morning. Both the rapid link and the torrent work fine. This was a closed Beta last year. This client is based on that closed-beta one. It sounds like you have the same problem with the Evan Wehrer above that the game closes almost immediately after opening. Solve that and then it will start updating.

That forum you linked, totally solved my problem. I finally managed to start LoL. But when i join a game, my screen is just filled with colors and crappy images,it's not playable.

That is very strange. Since everything else works I can only attribute it to your graphics card or its driver. If you have an integrated graphics card such as an intel one it might be caused be that. You can start tutorial game so there is no pressure press the esc key and go to the video settings. Start playing around with the settings and see if anything makes a difference. Other that than i cannot think of anything.

This is very odd. Maestro errors usually refer to connection issues.
Check if you have firewall issues and if the required ports are open. Check the Legue of Legend forums for relevant issues

Me back again. Everything has been working perfectly for ages but after I downloaded the patch today I found it was impossible to join games. I can hit play just fine, and champion selection works but as soon as the game starts the screen just goes black then after about a minute an error report comes up saying it's because of my firewall, which is allowing League of Legends as well as PvP.net. No idea what to do. Any chance you could help?

Just to update, I appear to be able to play on the North American server (tutorial worked at least) but games on EU aren't working at all.

Hey guys
This problem sometimes occurs in updates. There is nothing wrong with your installation of the game or its update. The problem is with the European server.
When an update comes out we pick it up from the North American server due to the hacked client we are using. The European server is updated a day or two afterwards. In the mean time we cannot play on the european server but only in the american since the american is patched but the european isn't.
So basically be patient until the european server is patch as well.

Server Blocked means that you IP is blocked and is not allowed to connect to the server. Chances are that you are in SE Asia cause an entire region is blocked due to a private contract with a 3rd party company that is supposed to provide the SE Asia server

I have to point out though that it is not a competition. It is is just a guide to help mac gamers play League of Legends from what I have learned so far playing the game on my Mac. Any information/guide provided by anyone is welcome.

Regarding your issue i would suggest to give it a try. Installing the game is not much trouble and there is a good chance that it might work ok. On the other hand intel graphics chipsets tend not to perform well in games. You could try lowering the game resolution to improve performance.
I would be happy to hear your experience regarding this as it will help other players with intel graphics chipsets as well.

It some times does that. You try restarting the application and it will resume the update from where it stopped. By the way today a new update was released and that might have caused the problem.

it means that you are not connecting to the right server. If you have a european account you need to make sure that the lol.properties file is set for the european servers. Respectively if you have an american account you need to make sure that lol.properties file connects to the NA servers

When you click play it is supposed to get minized in the tray. After it is minimised the login screen comes up.

For the graphics issues you are facing check your games graphics setting. In case you have an intel integrated graphics card this might cause the issues.

I download the beta off of the link you posted but when I open it, it tells me that "Pando Media Booster cannot be started." However, my brother has the same computer (Mac OS X v. 10.6.7) and he installed it just fine. He does not have "Pando Media Booster."

i got to the LoL installer and than I got a message after selecting to install on the HD, and entering my admin password. It says:

I think you can safely ignore all of these instructions now. I just downloaded this torrent http://btjunkie.org/torrent/League-of-Legends-Mac-Beta/4358c27185aa3309790fd0682452ab3c469c63dea046 and then went to install. I thought it didn't work at first, but the problem is the window for LOL doesn't appear over your other windows on your desktop, so you have to minimize everything on your desktop and then you will see the LOL interface. Click play, it will do a quick update then you are good to go. I have a Macbook pro 2010 and it works great! See you on the battlefield.

i downloaded the LoLDownloader, but everytime i double click on it, the download screen would pop up, along with a pop up saying "error creating installation directory". my language setting is US, and i can't find any problems regarding to it.

Hi guys. I am sorry for the delayed response but I was moving house.

Regarding the frozen update sequense it happens some times. All you have to do is quit and reopen the game. The update will continue from where it left off.

Regarding the language problem. Try changing your system language to something else(English GB for example).

Tyler: This is very odd. I have not encountered such a problem. make sure the queue line in the properties file is set for your current region.

Regarding the SEA problem. Currently there is no way to play LoL either from either windows or mac or any operating system in SEA. I think Garena has made a deal with Riot about setting up the servers sometime in the future.

Regarding installation problem. If you cannnot install the game try downloading the whole game from the provided link

The app crashed when i tried to launch it, but i was too lazy to do what's mentionned in the forum.

I just killed the stalled process and relaunched the application and it is now patching so yay for me.

Are you sure the game localisation corresponds to your account localisation? I mean if you have a european account have you made sure you connect to the european server? And if have an american account are you sure you connect to an american server?

hi I have a bit of problem on my 3rd battle, it stop loading and I have to force quit it then restart my comp to play again but then it stopped loading again on the 3rd. Does this usually happened? and I can't opened your forum link. Its always said website offline

The game does not usually crash. When you leave a battle fro any reason though, you cannot join another one until the one you were playing is finished so it is natural that it was loading that battle again for you. That is a rule of the game and not specific to windows or mac.

make sure you have a valid account for the server locality you are connecting to eg. An american account for american server and european account for european server.
If you still have the invalid certificate try changing the date of you computer to something before 2008. login, logout and change it again back to normal. This should fix this.

But when my position in the line reaches 0, I receive a Login Error message: "Client Version .36.14 is rejected by server".

You client was updated fomr the American server but the european server has not updated yet. usually European server gets updates 1-2 days after the american. In the mean time you cannot connect since your client has newer version that the server its trying to connect.
To prevent this in the future I updated the guide to include this. Check the last steps of the guide for this and make the relevant changes. it is safer to make the changes after the European server is patched.

Everything went perfect, last time it said "cannoct connect to pvp.net " , now when i try to run the lol app it doesn't runs, the icon avaible at the dock and nothing happens after 10 sec the icon dissapear..

Hi, Iv fallowed all your instructions and successfully downloaded and installed the game. I have it running on a MacBook Pro 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 DDR3, 512MB Nvidia Gforce 9600M GT. (If that matters)

My problem is, the titles screens and audio seem to be working fine, as well as control of the character, however the display is completely wacked out. it starts off fine but as soon as there is any screen movement (during a match) the immages clone themselves and its completely unplayable. I have tried adjusting the video settings with no luck.

Is anyone else having this issue?

Play the game fullscreen and set the video quality to low. If your Macbook sports a second graphics card make sure you are using the powerful one (instead of the integrated one)by selecting "Higher Performance" on the Energy saver menu on System Preferences

Adam, I have sound problems too. The only way I get my sound back is if everything except LoL is closed and wait until the sound is back, in a match. Then I reopen the things I want (Ventrilo, etc).

Sometimes I switch the sounds to my headphones, rather than using speakers. Not sure if that will work for you tho.

As for the comment above, No idea. That only happens to me if I have peerblock on and only when I play a match. Maybe something is blocking it from opening, or you need to be on administrator.

Changing the language of your Client:
Open the next file within your League of Legends application:

Contents -> Resources -> transgaming -> c_drive -> rads -> system

Open: locale.cfg with your Texteditor.

Delete all the text inside, and replace it with one of these lines, according to which language (English, German, French, Spanish or Chinese) you prefer

Some people might have a problem launching the LolDownloader on MacBook Pro, make sure your Java version is not 64 bits: in /Application/Utilities/Java/Java Preferences make sure that a 32 bits version of Java is on top of the others

Hey, downloaded the lol. launcher, it begins downloading the pando media booster when the bar fill up it just remains like that forever. I have a link below on what the problem looks like, is it the Java 34 bit problem. Im on a Mac Pro OSX leopard.

Sry for bothering even more, but I definitely do not know what the problem is with my LoL.

Yesterday I downloaded the beta version you were talkin about in your upper comments. It all was installed well, It updated and I ve got quickboot as well. So I first downloaded the US and then changed to the EU server. I too changed the language - and now it is on german. SO! Looking like I did do SMTH... xD but I cant get into the game- it is the same problem as Anale had in February :( You sad smth about the lq_url but I don´t know what to do about it... ://

I have read this entire post and tried anything that seems it might help. I downloaded the torrent, and was able to update fully. But, when I go to log in it says "connection failure: unable to login to the PvP.net server." Is there anything I can do to solve this? I would REALLY like to play some LoL!

Try installing the game from the alternative download(download through the torrent file)

Try to "Force Quit it": Press alt+Command+Esc (alltogether ) Select lol from the list and force quit it.

The problem with the login queue (lq_uri) was solved then. Thus since you installed now you used the correct uri.
Make sure that you created a european account for the game and at your lol.properties file you have assigned the european server.

I made sure that the lol.properties file had all the information pertinent to the North American server in it. It looks exactly like you have it in the post. It still gives me the same error message "connection failure: unable to login to the PvP.net server." And when I click "Ok" it just closes the window. I feel like I am going to be that exception in this, even though I well exceed the requirements for the game. If you have any other suggestions for me, I will be checking this thread frequently. As always your continued patience is much appreciated.

Since you have a valid NA account and you have saet up the game to connect to the NA server I do not think the problem is mac related. It is probably RIOT related.
There have been reports of this message from NA players independently if they use a PC or a MAC. I would advice you to try it again in a few hours or tomorrow to see if anything has changed form riots side. It probably is a network related problem. If not I do not know what it might be...
Oh, and a 'just in case question': Does the message on the bottom-left of the login window say that the server is online?

I have tried again and again, even tried using the European server. I cannot get past the login screen. When I put my username and password in and press login it loads for a min and then shoots out the same error message. It says the server is online as well, so I don't get it. Its really too bad, I was excited for this game. If there are any other thoughts Ill be checking the thread.

"Server unavailable" is a problem on riots side. You will be able to login as soon as they solve it. It has nothing to do with the mac client

I am sorry but I cannot think why this might happen. Try messing around with the video setting of the game and set them all to "low" to see if is makes any difference.

I do not think it is an issue with the mac client. Check to see if you have any functions assigned to that key or check the game settings for something similar

First of all I want to thank you for making this guide and actually answer patiently to people ;)
I've been playing for some months in the EU servers with no problems.
Today I've created an account to play in the NA servers and did the changes you refer in your guide.
The problem happens when I try to open the game. The LoL symbol appears on the bottom of the screen (like it does when you start any program) but then it disappears and the game doesn't open at all. If I change it all back to EU definitions it works perfectly again.
Any idea how to solve this?

Dear Anonymous friend

you should keep in mind that European and American Servers are independently patched(usually within a few days difference). Thus if you have set up you client either way and the other runs on a different version you will not be able to connect and play. In order for you to switch servers you have to change the region on the cfg file and ,if there is a difference on the version number, wait until they are on the same version. Alternatively you can reinstall->switch region configuration-> and then update to the region's version

So, I finally understood the problem: in the system.cfg file you say US region but it is actually NA ;)

I have downloaded the game and done all of the changes that you recommended. What is happening is the launcher will open and update until it says PLAY in the bottom right, but with I click play it just minimizes the launcher and nothing happens.

Sorry to bother you, but I have been having a major problem with the game client. I have downloaded and updated and i can join games, but it seems like the screen does not refresh. All the colors just blur together when i try to move.

since you patched while having set up as European client you might have some differences with the NA client and that maybe the reason why you cannot connect.
