After 5 days of media blockage I just finished watching the awards.

ebenet pretty much covered everything I wanted to say. I enjoyed watching Kathryn Bigelow get the best director award although I do think that The Hurt Locker was a bit overrated and didn't deserve all of the Oscars it won. Oh well, it wouldn't be the Oscars if there were no injustices.

Quite a boring show too, this year, although there were many cool geeky moments (clip from Evil Dead 2 anyone?).

"personal opinion: Meryl Streep was robbed" - My thoughts exactly! Her performance in Julie and Julia was utterly convincing and you just completely forgot that it was Meryl Streep playing the character. I haven't seen the Sandra Bullock movie, but I can't recall a single film she has been in that has required her to 'act'.

Since it may have been a long cinematic winter in Crete (although I have some reservations in certain movies!), you may be pleased to know that Shutter Island still hasn't opened in London! We have another 10 days yet, so hurrah for the Cretan exclusives!

Since in your review you mention Scorcese stepping away from conventions (gangs etc), I should mention that there is another movie that is -possibly- using the same techniques, namely Cape Fear!

A final note: recently I watched "A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies". It is, in my humble opinion, one of the best documentaries ever made...

I have to say that we had great time. there was heavy commentary on both films throughout.
When we noticed the same computer scene we were like...."wtf? Did we see that?" Naturally we had to check it!
Two fantastic SciFi films by Ridley Scott. My favourite of the two has to be Blade Runner, probably due to this Film Noir, rainy, distopian feeling.

Avatar kicked some serious terran-ass! I finally saw it with 5 days delay. IT WAS AWESOME!!! Truly entertaining in the most sincere meaning of the word. It was the most impressive film i 've seen in years . And the classic story did not bother me one bit. I actually liked the story very much. Classic stories are called classic for a reason and accompanied with a visually and literally rich world they kick ass!

Very Informative, thank you ebenet. As Hotshuk mentioned during the movie i could not be bothered to look for glitches. One thing to note though is that it took me 30 minutes or so until my eyes got used to it and almost double that for fast-paced scenes...It was truly awesome though!

Very informative article! I have to admit that during Avatar, I was so immersed into the movie that I didn't really realise any misgivings in the picture quality. Also, with no recent experience to compare it too I can only say that it was a great viewing spectacle. However, I'll be looking at it with a more critical eye next time... is that good or bad? I just finished watching the Nighmare Before Christmas 3D in the XpanD system, and once again can verify its superiority - ghosting is almost non present, apart from scenes with very bright objects in a dark background. Brightness levels are ok, and to tilting or viewing angle problems whatsoever.

I watched Avatar in Dolby 3D. Unfortunately the cinema that has an XpanD 3D system here in Heraklion is not showing the film. Looks like I will have to wait for another good film to see the differences between Dolby 3D and XpanD (and NO I am not watching "A Christmas Carol" just for the 3D).
